PESTICIDES AND CHILDREN DON’T MIX, SAYS EXPERT

DR. ELIZABETH GUILLETTE’S LANDMARK FINDINGS SHOW
PESTICIDE EXPOSURES CAN DAMAGE CHILDREN

LocalMotion presents SAFE SCHOOLS

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 31, 2001 — Can pesticides hurt children? The answer is “Yes,” according to Dr. Elizabeth Guillette, keynote speaker at the November 10 Safe Schools workshop presented by LocalMotion.

The workshop, titled “How Integrated Pest Management Will Reduce the Need for Pesticides,” also features representatives from area schools who practice basically non-toxic pest control — safely, effectively and economically.

LocalMotion’s Safe Schools workshop, “How Integrated Pest Management Will Reduce the Need for Pesticides,” takes place Saturday, Nov. 10, from 12:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Trombly Elementary School Auditorium, 820 Beaconsfield Road, Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. The program is open to the public; a donation of $10 per person is appreciated.

Keynote speaker Dr. Elizabeth Guillette will discuss her startling findings that clearly link pesticide exposure to diminished abilities in children — lack of energy, learning disabilities and coordination problems. Her Nov. 10 presentation is titled, “Pesticides: Are the Warning Signs a Reality?”

Dr. Guillette is a distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Center for Bioenvironmental Research at Tulane and Xavier Universities.

LocalMotion is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the connections between toxic chemicals in the environment and negative health consequences, such as cancer, in southeastern Michigan.

Speakers also include Mr. Dale Hodgson, Board Certified Entomologist and Pest Management Specialist with the University of Michigan Plant Services; Mr. Tim Gruszczynski, Projects Crew Chief, Ann Arbor Public Schools; Mr. Bernard Smith, Assistant Manager-Custodial Services, Birmingham Public Schools; and Mr. Gary Brezinski, Director of Building Services, West Ottawa Public Schools.

Mr. Larry Swain, Community Program Manager, Pesticide & Plant Pest, Management Division, Michigan Department of Agriculture, will discuss positive and successful results schools and communities have experienced with non-toxic pest management strategies. Contributing his expertise and time, Mr. Swain has been advising LocalMotion on the Safe Schools program throughout its development.
