Keeping Historic Structures Safe By Showing Termites the Door

By Anonymous

July 2, 2004 -- A year after donating its services to monitor, locate and eliminate active termite colonies, while preventing new ones, at Old Bethpage Village Restoration in Old Bethpage, N.Y., Knockout Pest Control is pleased to report the village is winning the battle against this structurally damaging pest.

Knockout installed the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination SystemŽ, a service valued at over $20,000, at the buildings in jeopardy from termite infestation. The service, provided by the company, will last for several more years in order to monitor, detect and eliminate new termite colonies and to prevent damage at these historic buildings.

In 1963, Old Bethpage Village Restoration was born when Nassau County acquired the 165-acre Powell property, a farm located on the Nassau-Suffolk border. As development swept across Long Island, irreplaceable landmarks were being destroyed at an alarming rate. Plainview’s historic Manetto Hill Methodist Church in 1963 became the very first property to be saved and moved. More properties have been saved and resituated on the park’s 209 acres. The goal of the village is to have a representative sampling of 19th Century structures. After buildings have been moved they are carefully restored to their specific point in history.

Unfortunately, the age of the historic structures, coupled with inconsistent restoration led to some of these wooden structures to suffer from termite damage that could cause further harm, without intervention. As an expert in termite prevention and control, Arthur M. Katz, president of Knockout Pest Control located in Uniondale, didn’t hesitate in contacting county officials last year to facilitate his request to donate his company’s products and services.

Soon after the gift was accepted by the county, Knockout installed the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination SystemŽ and began checking the properties designated as ‘high risk’ immediately. “Some sites were chosen because there was active termite activity going on such as swarming. Other sites were chosen that didn’t have active termite activity yet, but as trained termite specialists, we knew it would be just a matter of time. Our instincts and knowledge has proved us correct,” explains Henry Yane, a pest control specialist with Knockout.

The Sentricon System is a revolutionary advancement in protecting structures from termites. The technology works by combining technology which not only treats the termites but also electronically detects them and their colonies attacking the structure. Knockout recommends the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System because it is an innovative and community responsible subterranean termite baiting system that acts like a termite security system. It provides properties with continuous defense against termites through proven colony elimination while being less disruptive than other treatments. Once the termite colonies are eliminated, company technicians continue to electronically monitor the property to provide lifetime protection against new termite colony re-infestation.

The Sentricon System is the leader in termite protection, using the latest in termite technology to help protect more than one million properties, including Old Bethpage Village Restoration, the Statue of Liberty, White House and French Quarter, from costly termite damage. It is backed by independent research including more than 15 universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. No other termite treatment offers such a wealth of research data to prove its effectiveness.

The commitment to keep this historical park preserved will continue for years as part of Knockout’s generous gift to the county which they hope others will be inspired to make also.

Experts in termite, bird, carpenter ant, rodent and bee/wasp control; Knockout Pest Control has been a family owned business since 1975. Recognized as an innovator in the field of pest control, Knockout was one of the areas first companies to be chosen by Dow AgroSciences to offer the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination SystemŽ commercially, in 1995, and is the forerunner in the use of the electronic Sentricon, detection technology. Its’ President, Arthur M. Katz, is also a member of the Dow AgroSciences Advisory Committee for Sentricon. Knockout services residential and commercial properties from Montauk Point to Manhattan and from Staten Island to Rockland and Westchester Counties.
